Founded in 1803, Incorporated in 1831 under the name Newcomb, then in 1835 renamed Camden and became known for the famous Black Walnut Festival and the Depot, The Village offers small town flavor along with sidewalks and ball parks while also providing a local IGA grocery store, Camden Medical Center, and a local elementary school making it a convenient for young families to locate and grow. Gratis – translates “as a kindness” dubbed by Samual Stubbs a Quaker friend of the area that petitioned the Commissioners to form a new Township in 1811. Alexander C. Lanier granted the Township and called it Gratis.
